Google Analytics 4: How To Prepare For The Migration

Updated: Sep 14, 2022

In 2019, Google introduced Google Analytics 4 to address evolving measurement standards and announced plans to officially sunset Universal Analytics (the current generation of analytics) on July 1, 2023. With just over a year before the transition to Google Analytics 4 is complete, now is the time to upgrade your Google Analytics tracking. Migrating to Google Analytics 4 today will allow you to compare insights with your current Universal Analytics insights while building your data collection under the new GA4 property. We discuss some of the most important changes with Google Analytics 4 on our blog.

Set Up Your Google Analytics 4 Property

If you already have a Global Site Tag (gtag.js) and Universal Analytics tracking code on your website, you can set up your GA4 Property in a few simple steps.

  1. Visit https://analytics.google.com. Select the website you want to migrate.

  2. Click Admin.

  3. Under the Property tab, click GA4 Setup Assistant.

  4. Click Get Started.

  5. When you click Get Started, a pop-up will appear. Read through the information and make sure to check the box to Enable data collection using your existing tags. Click Create property.

Your Google Analytics 4 property is now connected to your site and collecting data. It can take up to 48 hours to see data in your new property.
